LESLEY!” NANCY SHOUTED AFTER her, but the slender girl quickly disappeared into the arcade. What in the world was she up to? Nancy was tempted to follow Lesley, but so far her behavior, puzzling as it was, didn’t seem connected to the shoplifting. Dan Schaffer, though—he was another matter.

Nancy decided it was time to talk to Dan directly. She dumped the contents of Lesley’s tray into the waste container and stacked the tray on a shelf nearby. Then she headed toward CD City, where Dan worked.

On the way across the central court, Nancy ran into Frank. His face lit up when he saw her. “Hey,” he said. “I was hoping I’d see you today. Things get so crazy, I didn’t know if I’d have the chance.”

“Got a minute?” Nancy asked, smiling up at him.

“Just,” Frank said ruefully. “My boss is so worked up over this Lynxette scene, I can’t be gone long.” He tapped her arm lightly. “So how’s the investigation coming along?”

Nancy stopped gazing into his eyes and forced her mind back to business. “I’m making a little progress on the thefts,” she reported, and started to tell him what she’d learned.

Frank reached out and brushed a strand of Nancy’s red-gold hair off her cheek. Between thrashing around in the truck, and the wind in the parking lot, Nancy suddenly realized her hair must be a tangled mess. Frank didn’t seem to mind.

“Whoops!” He drew back suddenly. “My boss is over by the arcade. I’d better get moving.” He gave her one last grin as he backed away. “See you.”

“Yeah, see you,” murmured Nancy, turning reluctantly back toward CD City. It was a moment before she realized she hadn’t told him about finding Lesley’s backpack, or about her conversation with Lesley in the food court. “Oh, Frank!” she cried, but he had vanished into the crowd.

Just then Nancy heard her name being called from another direction. It was George, loaded down with shopping bags. A quick look proved her friend had hit all the mall’s sports stores.

“Hi!” George said, casting an eye down at her bags. “Bet you can’t guess what I’ve been up to.”

Nancy chuckled. “Haven’t a clue.”

“Actually, I was killing time before the in-line freestyle competition at RinkWorld.”

“So you were checking out sales—”

“And looking for Mr. X,” George admitted. “You haven’t seen him—”

Nancy shook her head. George’s grin faded a little. “Hey, I’m headed for CD City,” Nancy said. “Want to come?”

“Sure, why not?” George said.

In keeping with Fashion Week, CD City had been transformed into the mall’s Lynxette headquarters. A lifesize cutout of Lynxette in her gold Morrell jacket stood at the front of the store. “Money Talks” was blasting from the store’s numerous speakers as the video monitors that hung from the ceiling played Lynxette’s video. A group of kids mobbed the Lynxette bin, checking out all her old CDs. Half the girls in the store were wearing Morrell jackets.

George checked her bags at the door, then headed off to browse through the CDs. Nancy went up to the cash register.
